JOHN CARRILLO
Operations Supervisor, NDD
John has worked for the NDD for seven years, holding several positions before his current job as Operations Supervisor. He had previously worked for the County Parks Department, and he finds the chance to maintain and beautify downtown Newark rewarding.
He manages up to 75 people in peak season, 65 in the off-peak season, and covers the entire Newark Downtown District. That could seem daunting to some people, but he keeps his perspective and helps his team do the same. “I tell them—don’t turn a molehill into a mountain.”
His friends would describe him as loving, honest, and level-headed, which is fine by him. Just don’t call him “boss.”
“I don’t like that,” he laughs. “I am hands- on. I like to work alongside the team; I am not afraid to get dirty. I tell the team leaders—don’t just give orders, help them do it. Show your team and help them if they are doing it wrong.”
“One way or another, I’ll get it done. ”
This kind of attitude and team effort means he feels more than able to handle any challenge. He can always see a way to make everything work. One of his latest improvements has been purchasing little portable powerwashers that connect to fire hydrants instead of using tanks. The powerwashers can operate efficiently without the team having to constantly stop and refill tanks. He is good at thinking on his feet, maybe with the help of a little caffeine. “You’ll always see me with a Dunkin’ cup,” he jokes.
He loves being outdoors: in his free time, he enjoys hiking at South Mountain Reservation or even walking through local parks, appreciating the tranquility.
